The 2026 Sierra 1500
Four engines and eight trims, running from a work-spec Pro to a massaging-leather Denali Ultimate. Here is what actually separates them, so you walk onto the Route 17 lot already knowing which Sierra you came for.
The 2026 GMC Sierra 1500 offers four powertrains and eight trims. Maximum towing reaches 13,300 pounds with either the 6.2L V8 or the 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel. Choose the TurboMax four-cylinder for everyday driving, the 5.3L or 6.2L V8 for towing on gasoline, the Duramax for torque and highway range, and AT4 or AT4X if the road ends before the job does.

What the Sierra 1500 actually is
A half-ton pickup built on one frame and then split into eight very different trucks. Cab, bed, engine and trim are four separate choices, and they are the four that decide everything else.
Crew Cab is offered across every trim. Double Cab is available on Pro, SLE and Elevation. Regular Cab is Pro only.
TurboMax four-cylinder, 5.3L V8, 6.2L V8, and the 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel inline-six.
Pro is specified for fleets and contractors. Denali Ultimate adds full-grain leather with massaging front seats.
Denali pursues refinement. AT4 and AT4X pursue traction. They are the same truck answering different questions.

Four engines, four different arguments
Engine choice moves the Sierra's capability further than trim does. Two of the four reach the same maximum tow rating by completely different routes.
Standard on Pro. Best-in-class standard torque, and enough truck for most weekends.
The traditional answer. Standard on AT4, and the middle ground between the TurboMax and the 6.2L.
Standard on Denali. Available from SLT upward, and the top of the gasoline range.
Turbo-diesel inline-six. The torque figure is the highest in the lineup, and it arrives low.
Maximum towing, engine by engine
Maximum ratings depend on cab, bed, axle ratio and equipment, and no single truck achieves every figure at once. The Sierra towing and payload matrix breaks the numbers down by configuration, and if you are weighing a half-ton against a three-quarter-ton, the Sierra 1500 vs. 2500HD comparison is the better starting point.
The ladder, from Pro to Denali Ultimate
Eight rungs. The meaningful jumps are at SLE, where engine choice opens up, at SLT, where the larger engine becomes standard, and at Denali Ultimate, where Super Cruise is included rather than optional.
| Trim | Starting MSRP | Standard engine | What it is for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pro | $38,300 | 2.7L TurboMax | Fleet and contractor specification. Regular, Double or Crew Cab. |
| SLE | — | 2.7L TurboMax | Where the 5.3L V8 and the Duramax diesel become available. |
| Elevation | — | 2.7L TurboMax | Monochrome exterior treatment on the SLE mechanical package. |
| SLT | — | 5.3L V8 | First trim with a larger engine as standard equipment. |
| AT4 | $59,195 | 5.3L V8 | Off-road hardware with on-road manners retained. |
| AT4X | — | 6.2L V8 or Duramax | The serious one. Multimatic dampers, twin lockers, 33-inch tires. |
| Denali | $64,595 | 6.2L V8 | The luxury half-ton, and the volume choice at the top of the range. |
| Denali Ultimate | $76,295 | 6.2L V8 | Full-grain leather, massaging front seats, Super Cruise standard. |
If you want the trim walk in more depth than a table allows, the Sierra trim levels guide goes rung by rung, and the Sierra 1500 buyer's guide covers the ordering and equipment decisions that follow.
AT4 and AT4X
AT4 is the off-road trim most people should buy. AT4X is the one built for people who have already found the limits of the first.

What the AT4X adds
- Multimatic DSSV dampersSpool-valve damping that holds composure both at speed on rough surfaces and during slow technical work.
- Front and rear electronic locking differentialsTwo lockers, not one. This is the single biggest traction difference over AT4.
- Two-inch factory lift on 33-inch tiresGoodyear Wrangler Territory mud-terrain tires on 18-inch wheels.
- 11.5 inches of ground clearanceWith an AEV winch-capable front bumper and a boron-steel approach skid plate.
Six positions, including a load stop for long material, a second-tier load surface, a standing workstation and a step. Standard on Denali.
Both AT4 and AT4X can be specified with the 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel or the 6.2L V8, so off-road hardware does not force a powertrain compromise.
AT4X allocation is limited. If a specific configuration matters to you, ordering a truck to spec is often faster than waiting for one to arrive.
The screens, and what runs on them
Over 40 inches of combined driver-facing display, anchored by a 13.4-inch touchscreen with Google built-in and a 12.3-inch driver information centre.
- Google built-inNavigation, voice assistance and the Play Store run natively, so the truck does not depend on a phone to be useful. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are there when you want them.
- Super CruiseHands-free driver assistance across more than 400,000 miles of pre-mapped road. Standard on Denali Ultimate.
- ProGrade TraileringAvailable from SLT upward. Transparent Trailer View uses the tailgate camera to render the road behind the trailer on the centre screen.
- Camera coverageMultiple views for hitching, tight parking and low-speed off-road work, all on the 13.4-inch display.

Which Sierra is yours
Start with the heaviest thing you tow and the roughest surface you drive. Those two answers narrow eight trims to two or three faster than a spec sheet will.
Pro, SLE or Elevation
The TurboMax handles a boat, a pair of jet skis or a small equipment trailer without complaint, and it is the least expensive way into the truck.
SLT, Denali or the Duramax
Above 11,000 pounds you want the 6.2L V8 or the diesel. If most of that towing is highway miles, the Duramax is the one to drive first.
AT4, or AT4X
AT4 covers trailheads, job sites and snow. AT4X is for repeated technical terrain, and the twin lockers are the reason.
Cross-shopping outside the brand is reasonable, and we would rather you did it with real numbers — the Sierra 1500 vs. Ford F-150 comparison uses published manufacturer specifications on both sides.
Buying a Sierra on Route 17
Buick GMC of Mahwah sits on Route 17 in northern Bergen County, which puts a Sierra within a short drive of most of northern New Jersey and the Rockland County line.

Trade and finance
Start with a trade-in valuation, then work the numbers through the finance centre before you choose a trim.
GMC and Buick together
Both marques share one roof here, which is a genuine advantage when a household is weighing a Sierra against an SUV. Our history on Route 17 explains how that came about.
Sierra 1500 questions, answered
The questions shoppers ask most often before a first test drive.
How much can a 2026 GMC Sierra 1500 tow?
Maximum towing for the 2026 Sierra 1500 is 13,300 pounds, achieved with either the 6.2L V8 or the 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel. The 5.3L V8 tows up to 11,200 pounds and the 2.7L TurboMax up to 9,400 pounds. Every figure depends on cab, bed, axle ratio and equipment, so the rating for a specific truck is the one that matters.
What engines are available in the 2026 Sierra 1500?
Four. The 2.7L TurboMax four-cylinder produces 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque. The 5.3L V8 and 6.2L V8 are the gasoline options, with the 6.2L rated at 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft. The 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel inline-six produces 305 horsepower and 495 lb-ft, the highest torque figure in the lineup.
What is the difference between Sierra AT4 and AT4X?
AT4X adds Multimatic DSSV spool-valve dampers, front and rear electronic locking differentials, a two-inch factory lift, 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory mud-terrain tires on 18-inch wheels, an AEV winch-capable front bumper, a boron-steel approach skid plate and 11.5 inches of ground clearance. AT4 is the more road-biased of the two and comes standard with the 5.3L V8.
Which Sierra 1500 trims come with Super Cruise?
Super Cruise is standard on the Denali Ultimate. It is GMC's hands-free driver assistance system and operates on more than 400,000 miles of pre-mapped roads. Availability on other trims varies by configuration and model year, so confirm it on the specific truck you are considering.
What does the Sierra 1500 MultiPro tailgate do?
The MultiPro tailgate moves into six positions. It provides a load stop for carrying long items, a second-tier loading surface, a standing workstation, easier access into the bed, and a step for entry and exit. It is standard on the Denali trim.
How much does a 2026 GMC Sierra 1500 cost?
Published starting MSRP begins at $38,300 for the Pro and rises to $76,295 for the Denali Ultimate, with the AT4 at $59,195 and the Denali at $64,595. Those figures exclude destination charge, taxes, title and dealer fees, and pricing changes over a model year, so confirm current numbers before ordering.
Which cab configurations does the Sierra 1500 offer?
Crew Cab is available across every trim from Pro through Denali Ultimate. Double Cab is offered on Pro, SLE and Elevation. Regular Cab is limited to the Pro trim.
Can I order a Sierra 1500 to my own specification at Buick GMC of Mahwah?
Yes. When a particular combination of trim, engine, cab and equipment is not on the lot, placing a custom factory order is often faster than waiting for a matching truck to arrive. That is frequently the case with AT4X, where allocation is limited.
Drive the two you are deciding between
Specifications narrow the field. Twenty minutes behind the wheel of a Denali and an AT4 back to back usually settles it.
Specifications, capability ratings, feature availability and pricing are drawn from GMC's published information for the 2026 Sierra 1500 and are subject to change. Maximum towing and payload figures require specific cab, bed, axle and equipment combinations and cannot all be achieved simultaneously on one vehicle. Always confirm the ratings, equipment and price of the individual vehicle you are considering. Images show vehicles that may be equipped with optional equipment not available on every trim.
